The Issues
"Senator Michael Waddoups is one of the most effective legislators on Capitol Hill. He has fought and won many battles on issues important to his westside constituents. He is not afraid to take a stand. He understands the issues and has the respect of his colleagues."
Public Safety All citizens have a right to be safe in their homes and in their neighborhoods. In the fight against crime, we need more than new laws. We need to take the handcuffs off law enforcement and give them the support and tools they need to do their jobs. Efficiency in Government I believe in restricting the growth of government, better utilizing existing funds and privatizing government functions where appropriate. I have been a leader in developing responsible taxation policies and limiting taxes without cutting proven programs. Education Education is and always will be the number one concern in Utah. Seventy percent of our state budget goes to education. We need to utilize every penny to its fullest capacity. Each student deserves the opportunity to receive a well-rounded education and the promise of a bright future. Equalization of School Districts I served on the Equalization Task Force which developed a formula to assist growing areas with construction funds to build new schools. I also fought hard to protect the existing bonds from being redistributed to non-growth Eastside schools. Immigration Because of federal inaction, Utah is being forced to protect itself by making new laws. Law enforcement needs new tools to fight illegal immigration. These new laws need to restrict illegal immigration, but still allow legal, law abiding immigrants. Compassion needs to be extended to undocumented children born in our country. I supported legislation to stop illegal immigrants from getting jobs and receiving public benefits. Integrity I believe a legislator’s number one responsibility is to the citizens he represents. I believe in being honest and willing to stand for American ideals and principles. My commitment to you is I will listen to all sides and cast my vote for those things that are best for everyone in Senate District 6. Healthcare America has the best healthcare system in the world. We have an obligation to allow citizens choice, transparency and availability. We must do everything possible to keep costs down and healthcare available. Transportation I have fought for funding to improve I-215, Redwood Road and our East/West arteries. Mountain View Corridor must be built and not be a toll road. Tax Reform and Cuts I have played an important roll in keeping taxes low and even cutting taxes when extra funds were available because of Utah’s vibrant, well-managed economy. With the current downturn in the economy, it is more important than ever that we are wise with the expenditure of our tax dollars. Questionnaire Each year I have sent a questionnaire to the constituents of Senate District 6 soliciting input from the residents of West Jordan and Taylorsville. Your input has been invaluable. I have compiled the results and used the statistics and comments in many of my debates to represent you on Capitol Hill.
